Moving Out of California Checklist: DMV, Taxes & Utilities - article banner

Moving out of California comes with more than packing boxes. Use this quick paperwork checklist to handle your DMV address change or out-of-state notice, tax records, utilities, mail forwarding, proof of your new residency, and final California account cleanup before you leave.

1. Proving Residency in Your New State

Before you can set up utilities or register your vehicle, you’ll need documents that prove you actually live at your new address.

Have these ready:

  • Home closing documents or rental agreements
  • Utility bills or service confirmations (once established)

Most utility companies will ask for proof of residency before activating services, so don’t get caught scrambling.

2. Don’t Forget About Taxes

Moving mid-year? You might need to file taxes in both your old and new states. Keep all important documents (closing statements, receipts, employment records) in a digital folder for easy access.

Pro tip: use your smartphone as a scanner and save everything as PDFs. When in doubt, reach out to a local CPA or tax advisor in your new state. They’ll help you understand exactly what you need for your next tax season.

3. DMV: Cars, Licenses, and Registration

When you change states, you’ll need to:

  • Update your driver’s license
  • Register your vehicle(s)
  • Notify the California DMV of your move within 10 days

Start by visiting your new state’s DMV website to schedule appointments and gather the required forms. Handling this early prevents fines and keeps you compliant.

4. Update Your Mailing Address

The U.S. Postal Service offers:

  • Online address changes
  • Temporary mail forwarding
  • In-person support at your local post office

It’s quick, easy, and ensures you won’t miss important mail during your move.

5. Close Out Old Accounts

Before you hand over the keys, contact your current utility providers to:

  • Confirm your service end date
  • Close out accounts
  • Pay off any remaining balances

Important: Don’t assume the final bill will come automatically. Speak with a live representative to confirm closure. Small unpaid bills can sneak into collections and hurt your credit score.

6. Stay Organized & Ask for Help

Moving is stressful, but being organized makes all the difference. Keep this checklist handy:

  • Proof of residency docs
  • Tax records & receipts
  • DMV paperwork
  • Utility account confirmations
  • Mail forwarding setup

When the process feels overwhelming, remember, there are specialists who can help guide you through it.

Leaving a rental behind? The inspection rights and deposit timeline that apply on your way out are covered in our California move-in and move-out inspections guide.

Leaving California but keeping a rental here?

Plenty of owners leave the state and keep their Pittsburg, Antioch, Brentwood, Oakley, Bay Point or Concord rental. If that is your plan, decide before the move how the property will run without you nearby. You have three real paths:

Sell before you go. If the numbers say sell, a tenant in place does not stop you; our guide to selling a rental property with tenants in California covers the notice rules and timing, and the rent vs. sell calculator walks the math both ways.

Keep it under full-service management. Rent is collected and disbursed on a predictable schedule, maintenance runs through a documented workflow, and monthly statements plus year-end tax documents reach you in your new state without you asking. Distance stops mattering; the pricing page has every number.

Lease-only, then self-manage remotely. We place a qualified resident and hand the property back to you. Honest caveat: self-managing from out of state means handling maintenance calls, notices, and California’s changing rules across time zones, so it fits owners with a reliable local vendor bench.

Frequently asked questions

What should California renters do before moving out of state?

Key steps: give your landlord proper written notice (typically 30 days for month-to-month leases), document the unit's condition with photos, return all keys on the last day, update your address with USPS, DMV, and the California FTB, and confirm your landlord has a forwarding address for your security deposit return within 21 days.

Does California tax income earned after you move out of state?

California is aggressive about claiming tax residency. Even after moving, California may tax income if you maintain significant ties (property, business, family). Filing a final California tax return in the year of departure and updating your voter registration and driver's license to your new state helps establish a clean break. Consult a CPA with multi-state experience.

How do I transfer my California vehicle registration when moving out of state?

You must register your vehicle in your new state within 30-90 days of establishing residency (timeline varies by state). Surrender your California registration and plates to the new DMV (some states require this). Cancel your California insurance policy only after your new policy is active and your new registration is complete.
